About
Julie Allbutt is a Melbourne-based artist who worked as a graphic designer for over twenty years, then as a sessional design lecturer for six years. A diagnosis of autoimmune disease led to a re-evaluation of life and work, and the subsequent decision to be creative on her own terms.
After a brief period of painting with oils, Julie undertook postgraduate study of contemporary art at Victoria College of the Arts (Melbourne University), which broadened the scope of her artistic endeavours – encouraging her to venture beyond the familiar confines of two dimensions into the third.
Thematically, Julie is interested in the areas of ’emotion’ and ‘play’, as well as aspects of memory and narrative. She is also drawn to nature and architectural structures, which she enjoys photographing.
Julie is currently working on a series of still life images that explore the dynamics of the ‘uncanny’ and implied narrative through the juxtaposition of seemingly unrelated objects.
